Breeding Objectives
Temperament
Early maturity
Heifers are joined as yearlings. Potential bulls must reach puberty by 12 months, with a scrotal measurement of at least 30cm off grass.
Fertility
Heifers must conceive within a six-week joining, while cows have an eight-week joining. Every breeder must wean a calf annually from two years of age to remain in the herd.

Uniquely Commercial Bulls. Greenstead Genetics is the seedstock arm of our certified organic, grass-fed beef business. Our breeding objective is to optimise profit per hectare by selecting fertile, efficient cattle that are low-cost to produce and high-value to sell.
Across our commercial herd, performance is measured from joining through to turnoff, providing objective feedback on fertility, growth, market compliance and beef quality. The compounding effect of long-term selection pressure has achieved early maturing, fertile, efficient cattle, keeping hip height and maintenance requirements down while maintaining weight for age to meet market specifications at turnoff.
REPRODUCTIVE DISCIPLINE Fertility, as the biggest profit driver in commercial beef production, is the foundation of our breeding program. Heifers are joined as yearlings for six weeks and must go on to wean a calf. Cows have an eight-week joining and every breeder must deliver a weaner annually – no exceptions.
BULL SELECTION Only the top 5% of male calves are kept as bulls. Selection is based on fertility and early puberty, structural soundness, temperament, phenotype, homozygous polled (PP) and weight with moderate frame. Bulls must reach puberty by 12 months, with a scrotal measurement of 30cm or more off grass. Bulls are grown entirely on grass and presented for sale in genuine working condition helping buyers make a more reliable assessment of how they will perform in the paddock when they get home.
BACKED BY DATA RePRO BI Genomic Breeding Values (GBVs) compare the genetic merit of our cattle on commercially relevant traits against other breeds and composites in the Northern Genomics Reference Population. Our 2026 sale bulls averaged in the top 8% of the reference population for Puberty, supporting the long-term selection for early maturity within our commercial herd.
Yearling heifers are joined for just six weeks (1 Nov – 15 Dec) and cows are joined for eight weeks (1 Nov – 31 Dec). The cow herd discipline of joining cows for only two months – and the same two months each year – means breeders must have an inter-calving interval of under 365 days, achieved in a natural environment.

“I have been performing the routine veterinary work at Dunvegan including pregnancy testing and bull testing for some years. In my experience the cattle are quiet and perform well year on year almost regardless of the season.
Each year the conception rate is consistently above 90%, including the heifers that are joined as yearlings. All females are joined for only 2 months. Empty females are culled which means that every bull produced, is from a cow that has produced a calf every year. This is extremely important as it sets them apart from many other bull breeding operations.
Fertility is a heritable trait. By keeping bulls only out of females that produce a calf every year means that the herd increases in fertility and these bulls will then pass this on to their progeny. Joining the cows for only 2 months (and the same months each year) also increases the selection pressure and means that only the most fertile cows become pregnant as their inter-calving interval has to be under 365 days.”
